Pressure is a trend — not a bite switch.
Anglers often look for one “good” pressure number. A better question is: what has the pressure been doing, and what weather change is travelling with it?
Fish are capable of sensing pressure in their environment. Research has shown that fish can use hydrostatic pressure as a depth cue. That is useful evidence that pressure is biologically meaningful — but it does not prove that one atmospheric-pressure value automatically creates a feeding window.
In practical fishing terms, a barometer is most useful as part of a weather transition. A steady reading, a sustained rise or a falling trend may coincide with changes in cloud, wind, temperature and rain. Those combined changes can alter where bait moves, how much light reaches the water and how comfortable a lure presentation feels.
Track the direction and rate of change over several hours. Avoid treating “high” or “low” pressure as good or bad without the rest of the conditions.
What to look at before changing your lure
- Is pressure rising, falling or staying relatively stable?
- Did the change arrive with stronger wind, cloud or rain?
- Has the light level changed enough to affect lure visibility?
- Are your bites changing at the same time, or are you only reacting to the number?
Wind changes more than the surface.
It can change light penetration, wave action, shoreline water movement, boat control and the way your lure travels through the water.
There is no universal rule that says “fish the windy bank” or “hide from the wind.” Wind direction, strength, duration and the shape of the dam all matter. A bank taking sustained wind may develop more surface disturbance and local water movement, while a protected bank may offer calmer presentation and better lure control.
For lure choice, wind often matters through visibility and control. Surface chop can reduce the visual neatness of a subtle presentation, while stronger water movement can make vibration, contrast or a more deliberate retrieve easier to track. That does not mean louder is always better — only that the presentation should still be detectable and controllable.
Rain can change the water you are actually fishing.
The important question is not only “is it raining?” but what the rain is doing to inflow, colour, temperature, visibility and access to food.
A brief shower and a major runoff event are different fishing conditions. Light rain may mainly change surface light and disturbance. Sustained or heavy rain can add inflow, cool or warm local water, increase turbidity and move material into the system. The effect will depend on the dam, catchment, season and where you are fishing.
After rain, pay attention to where the new water enters and how far the colour line or temperature change extends. In some situations that creates a distinct zone worth investigating; in others, runoff may make an area less suitable. Observation at the water should override a generic rule.
If visibility drops, can the fish still find the lure through contrast, silhouette, vibration or displacement — without making the presentation unnecessarily aggressive?
Movement matters more than “the dam is 80% full.”
Storage percentage describes how much water is in the reservoir. Fishing context improves when you also know whether the level is rising, stable or falling.
For South African dams, published storage levels are useful baseline information. But a percentage alone does not tell an angler how the shoreline, flooded cover, depth transitions or inflow areas have changed recently. The trend helps describe that movement.
These are starting hypotheses, not rules. The same level movement can produce different outcomes depending on species, water temperature, clarity, season and how fast the change is happening. Useful context. Low confidence as a standalone predictor.
Lunar illumination can affect the behaviour and depth use of some aquatic species, but the effect is species-specific and should not be turned into a universal “solunar score.”
Scientific studies do show lunar-linked changes in behaviour for some fish and marine predators, often through illumination and prey movement. That supports keeping moon phase and moonlight in the conversation. It does not support claiming that a full moon or new moon automatically means better fishing everywhere.
Da Vat Hy therefore treats lunar age, illumination, waxing or waning phase, moonrise and moonset as supporting context. The signal remains low-weight until real fishing outcomes show that it adds value for a specific water, species or situation.
Weather, water movement, time of day and local evidence remain more useful than a single lunar rating.
Translate the conditions into presentation choices.
The point of reading conditions is not to admire the data. It is to decide what you will do differently on the water.
Clear or bright water may reward a more natural, less intrusive look. Reduced visibility can justify stronger silhouette or contrast.
Chop, stained water or low visibility may increase the value of a lure that is easier to detect without relying only on colour.
Water level, wind, temperature and recent observations can all influence whether you start shallow, mid-water or deeper.
Retrieve speed should match the fish’s apparent willingness to chase, the amount of water movement and how well you can keep the lure in the useful zone.
Match forage and local confidence first; use condition context to decide how subtle or conspicuous that profile should be.
Record caught fish, bites and no-luck sessions. That turns a theory about conditions into something Da Vat Hy can actually evaluate.
